Jo Jo Zep - Taxi Mary (BLB Missing 12 Inch Mix)

\
There was a small period there in the early 80s when Australian music went all calypso. The Models wanted us to go to Barbados. Mental as Anything were rocking Hawaiian shirts and singing "If You Leave Me" The rest of the world was embracing New Romanticism or Yacht Rock in 1982, and we were stuck listening to bloody steel drums on Countdown on a Sunday night.

Even Jo Jo Zep got in on the act, no doubt fuelled by coke, dance floor dreams, and blow jobs from Jane Clifton.

Check out this ripper of a remix by Butch le Butch. Don't let the bubble burst.

Ambrosia - How Much I Feel (Digital Visions Re-Edit)

DJ Freddy G is a good bloke. He's a smooth, smooth DJ and remixer based in NYC and goes by the name Digital Visions. I've been pinching his remixes for ages now and playing them quite a bit. But this one caught my attention immediately.

You just know this silky smooth edit will get the summer started right. Oh, and if you ask nicely, he might even send you a free download. But ask nicely, and tell him I sent you!

Here's this month's mixtape.

DJ Soggy Disco Biscuit shakes up the hipsters of Brunswick

Well the good news is that I've found another venue to take on my Yacht Rock remixes and AOR Disco classics. Come on down to Howler in Brunswick on Friday night from 5pm to 7pm. I'll be out in the beer garden playing some Hall and Oats.

Sunday 13 October 2013

Dancin' in the Moonlight -- The Keane Brothers

Everything about this version is 'yes'.

Van Morrison's version ... um ... no.
Toploader's version. Bloody, hell, no!
The original King Harvest version ... maybe.
The Baha Men ... bahahahahahaahhaha

The Keane Brothers ... yes please.

See, disco makes everything better.

Wednesday 9 October 2013

Lionel Richie - You Are (Otti Edit)

Lionel Richie has a lot of good songs. This might be his best one. Yeah, I know. There's always "Hello" and that big clay head. But this one goes alright, eh? How's the little edit by Otti, too?

Sunday 6 October 2013

Shags -- The Dinner Set

Shags has decent taste in music. He used to be in The Smallgoods. Now he's in Lost Animal. And sometimes he DJs and this is what he plays. Glitchy electro mixed with some soulful grooves. Tribal beats and some ambient, swirly fusion.

It's the kind of thing I'd imagine Giorgio Moroder would play if he was hungover.

Guy Uppiah -- Keep Vinyl Alive

You probably don't know who Guy Uppiah is. The man was a DJ legend in Melbourne almost a decade ago. Shit, maybe two decades ago! God knows where he is now. Probably having dreams about Freakazoid. I used to catch a few sets of his at a club called Checkpoint Charlie back in the late 80s. All disco, with a little bit of a new style called House seeping through.

Check this mix. Strictly rhythm, strictly vinyl.

Anyone who drops Alison Limerick's "Where Love Lives" is alright by me.

Sunday 8 September 2013

Slow Ass Jolene (Soggy Disco Biscuit Edit) -- Dolly Parton

A few weeks back, I stumbled across a new verison of Dolly Parton's "Jolene". Not that new, really. Someone had come up with the idea of slowing it down from 45rpm to 33rpm. And the result was amazing. It now sounded like some hipster alt-country dude singing about his gay lover. Awesome!

So I made a little edit of it to make it a bit more DJ friendly and something I could use in my set.

Enjoy!

Monday 2 September 2013

Soggy Disco Biscuit -- Volume 30

No tracklisting this month. See if you can guess all the artists and songs here.

Summer is about to come around down here in Melbourne so this month I put together a bit of a mixtape demo. I'm gonna take it around the pubs and bars around town to see if I can get another Yacht Rock night going like I did last year.

So, if you own a pub or bar in Melbourne, drop me a message on the facebook page.

Thursday 29 August 2013

Robbie dupree - Steel away (Gorka extended edit)

This might be the greatest yacht rock song of all time. I'm glad to finally find an edit that extends it a bit. It makes it a bit more DJ friendly.

So, as summer looks like it might sneak up on us, it's time for DJ SDB to start looking for some beer gardens to play in. If you need some smooth, smooth tunes to get the punters drinking pina coladas and jugs of Pimms, then I'm your man.

Hit me up, yo!

Wednesday 14 August 2013

Gat Decor - Passion (Alkalino re-edit)

This is it! This, to me, is the song that captures everything about the early 90s sound that was filling my mind and moving my feet in the clubs of London.

The build, the hook, the break, the chords. Everything about this song just works. You'll know it when that piano comes in! You'll feel it. Can You Feel It!!!!?????

This new reworking by Alkalino does.

Friday 9 August 2013

Men At Work - Down Under (Chuck Norris Dub)

This is ridiculous. It's rank and wrong. You know you love it.

Just the sort of thing I'll play on the weekend.

Wednesday 7 August 2013

'A fifth of Beethoven' -- Walter Murphy (soulwax edit)

Is this a remix of a remix of that Beethoven track? what daffeck!

If I played this, would you go home? Or would you keep on dancing?

Fuck it, I'm playing it, anyways.

Wednesday 31 July 2013

Soggy Disco Biscuit -- Volume 29

Seriously, aren't you getting bored of this shit yet? How much disco can you handle in a month?

Okay ... so you'll no doubt hate this mixtape, too. It's chock-full of crappy goodness.

I'm starting to get the hang of this mashup caper. Just in time for 2002, eh? Maybe I can bring back the mashup, retro revival. Anyways, the start is all mashup. Everything from Lou Reed to Alex Lloyd. Yeah, it's as crap as that sounds.

Then, disco .. some more disco .. then M.A.R.R.S, because they're ace, and some more disco, maybe some Eagles (fuck!) and Sade to finish coz she's hot.

Hit play, yo!

(fuck me .. look at the size of my head below .... snigger!!)

Saturday 27 July 2013

Midnight Oil - Power & The Passion (Solid Light edit)

Remember Midnight Oil? Remember when Peter Garrett actually had some skerrick of credibility and you could watch him without thinking that one day he'd sell out and become everything he claimed to hate. Remember that?

Nah, me either!

Tuesday 23 July 2013

"Up and Out" -- One Era

I love it when you doods send me music. It means I don't have to spend all night on a Wednesday scrolling through Soundcloud through all the junk, and the trap, and the crap looking for something I'd actually listen to.

Just send me your tunes.

Like One Era did.

I don't know who this guy is. I don't know why he's sending me this track. But, he's calling it a chilled cosmic disco track and that's good enough for me.

It's sampling a Gary's Gang disco track from the 70s. Gary's Gang were a DJ's favourite dancefloor weapon. Loooong, calypso intros that were easy to mix into. Cheesy, terrible lyrics that no doubt sounded fabulous when you were all coked up. And a beat that wouldn't stop.

God bless the 70s disco!

Saturday 20 July 2013

Fun Lovin Criminals - Scooby Snacks (Pecoe Edit)

I like the breaks. I don't post enough breaks on this blog. So, these are the breaks.

Heard this track for the first time in a long time the other day in Brisbane. It goes alright. This mix cranks it up another notch, 'natch!

A fun little 2 and a half minutes.

Wednesday 17 July 2013

Lil Louis @ Haçienda, Manchester, UK /// 25 SEPT 1992

I've been on holidays for a while. But here's a little sumfin, sumfin to get things swinging again. Lil Louis (yes!), at the Haçienda (Yes!!), back in the olden days of 1992 (YES@ZOMG!!?!)

This is a rip from someone's dodgy tape, so turn it up, yo! Oh, and help us out with a track listing if anything jogs that memory.

Wednesday 3 July 2013

To Send Our Love (PEAKING LIGHTS' VOODOO TRANCE VERSION) -- World's End Press

They're back from a tour of the USA, having smashed a few sets in NYC and getting to hang out like the gals from Sex in the City. Now, all we need is for their album to drop and all will be well in the world.

This remix takes the original, adds a few layers of tribal beats, and filters the vocals. It's a bit deeper, but still very 3am dancefloor friendly.

Monday 1 July 2013

Soggy Disco Biscuit -- Volume 28

A bit of a change in direction for Podcast 28. I still can't take my hands off the new Daft Punk album and the Soul Machine remix of Giorgio by Moroder works well on the d-floor. A bit of electro-dubstep,  and some deep house get a run this month. But fear not soggy followers, there's plenty of that old 80s and 90s electro shit I know you love. Or hate. Or whatevs.

Oh, and check out my mad skillz where I hit eject on the wrong CD player around the 35 minute mark. Smooth, eh?

--tracklisting--

Greg Wilson -- Live @ New Guernica 10 March, 2013

This is a remarkable set from Greg Wilson at a club that I'm way too old to get into. Seriously, the bouncers at the door would take one look at my grey hair and my dad-shoes and laugh and send me down to the Croxton's Over-28 night.

Which makes me wonder what the hipster kids who get through the door at New Guernica would make of this set. Do they recognise Soul II Soul's "Back To Life"? Can they appreciate how groovy Chaka Khan's "Ain't Nobody" is to dance to? Would they clear the floor when Phil Collin's "In The Air Tonight" came on?

Probably not, actually.

No tracklisting -- you trainspotters will know all of these anyways.

Friday 14 June 2013

Soul Flight E07 -- DJ Same

DJ Same knows AOR Disco like no other DJ. The guy's a real inspiration. Check out this little mixtape he made for Clubbing Shanghai. You'll find a lot of the tracks I like to play in my mixtapes, too. Maybe DJ Same and DJ Mase should do a collaborative mixtape?!

Little Roy - Come As You Are (Alkalino rework)

Since dropping this at the end of last month's mixtape, I've been getting a few requests about it. So here it is. Kurt would probably love it. Who cares! The fucker's dead and Little Roy did this cover in 2011 so eat it, Nirvana tragics!

Saturday 1 June 2013

Soggy Disco Biscuit -- Volume 27

You know what's fun?! Making mixtapes. You know what's more fun?! Making mashup mixtapes, after drinking a whole lotta goon. This one starts cool enough, but at some stage I thought it would be a good idea to put Madonna's "Crazy For You" into the mix. Yeah, sorry 'bout that.

 --tracklisting--

It's a mess this month. Thought I'd try some three deck, mashup action. You'll hear ...

Sade, Soul II Soul, Sophie B Hawkins, Steve Miller Band, Tears for Fears, Daft Punk, Ace of Base, Madonna, Afro Cuban Band, Stardust, Marvin Gaye, Pointer Sisters, Gnarls Barkley, Air, Ladytron, Doobie Brothers, Deep Purple, Bryan Ferry, Time Bandits, and Little Roy doing Nirvana up the arse!

Ashely's disjointed evening mixtape

Big thanks to the AOR Disco crew for posting a mixtape I put together over a few nights in Summer.

"A friend of mine has seen a few nights closing in lately," says DJ Mase aka Soggy Disco Biscuit. "It's good to get out on the road, think a few thoughts and hum a few tunes. Behind the wheel we can expel a few demons and as the sun sets, the memories cease to be howling. This mix is for Ash!"

10CC - Dreadlock holiday (Disco Syndicate's summervibes special)

I'm yet to find my feet having spent the last 7 nights on a Wooden Shjip in QLD. A roll in the ocean needs a slower beat, a steady foot, and an eye on the horizon. Hold the helm and let the elements drive you forward.

10CC know a few things about smooth sailing tunes and concentrating on tackin' right. But check that key change, drop down the tempo, and get our mate Disco Syndicate to twist it into a 'Round Turn with Two Half Hitches'.

Late night, last song groove right here!

Hear it in the mix -- Soggy Disco Biscuit -- Volume 26

Soggy Disco Biscuit -- Volume 26

Hey there disco catz! I've been hearing a great range of tunes this month. Must be summer in Europe just around the corner. That's why the new Daft Punk and the new Empire of the Sun songs are getting massive airplay. Keep an eye out for the new World's End Press tune.

This mix is a bit of fun. Lots of disco, of course, but I had to drop in that protest song by The Beat to celebrate Thatcher's death. Some old remixes, some fun mashups, some crazy edits -- you know what to expect from a Soggy Disco Biscuit podcast.

Oh, and those fuckers on Soundcloud wouldn't let me uploads this mix this time. Copyright issues, or some bollox. So it's on Mixcloud.

Tell ya mates, share it on your Facebook, post in on your sister's Pinterest.

--Tracklisting--

Flight Facilities for 'triple j Mix Up Exclusives': 2002-2012

So we finally got there. The Flight Facilties dudes have posted the fourth and final set in their decade series.

This one is probably the best of the bunch. It actually is worth a couple of listens and you'll enjoy a lot of these tracks. Give it a whirl.

Looking back on the whole series, while I applaud the idea, and can see why the blogging world went bananas over it all, I still feel a bit bleugh. Maybe a bit underwhelmed. Maybe just a bit whelmed.

And where was Moloko? And Planet Funk, and Air, and Empire of the Sun?

Daft Punk - Get Lucky feat. Pharrell & Nile Rodgers

Ha! You thought this was going to be a preview of the new Daft Punk single, didn't you? Sorry to get your hopes up. It seems that everyone is just wetting themselves soggy over this new single, and it hasn't even dropped yet. There's been sneak previews on SNL, a bit of airtime at Coachella, and a lot of speculation. We know that Pharrel has some sweet vocals, and the master, Nile Rodgers is in the house. But that's it!

Which means that every kid with a pirated copy of Ableton and a bit of spare time has been busy looping together the clips and creating their own version of what this song could possibly be like.

This one's probably the best of the bunch and sounds the closest to what a true Daft Punk song is. What it is lacking, I'm sure you'll agree, is the classic breakdown that Daft Punk do so well.

But until the song is finally released, you'll have to enjoy this version.

Sade - Smooth Operator (Leon DeeJay Aegean Sunset Mix)

No need to ask, this is one smooth remix. Like a lot of the edits of this song, the intro is long enough to keep your dancefloor guessing as to what the song actually is.

Throw it on as the sun is coming down.

Another Nite In A Disco -- LNTG

I love LNTG so much. Like, so much! He used to go by the name of HMC and had a huge hit called Phreakin' in the mid 90s. Then he went away, and came back all discoed up.

I use a lot of his edits in my own sets. I dig his work, I understand his affection for old classics, and I respect his love of a cheesy remix.

Here's a little treat for you. He's got a big tour of Europe lined up for summer, and he's posted a live mix of one of his sets up on his soundcloud as a teaser. And what a great mix it is. Of course, a lot of his own reworks feature. But they're all good. A great night of disco

Not bad for an old techno DJ from Adelaide. Chuck this mix in ya pocket.

George Benson - Turn your love around (Alkalino Rework)

George Benson, doing what George Benson does best. This one's all extended, like. For no other reason than to give DJs a bit of room around the edges to play it in a set.
