Canyons -- Keep Your Dreams

These guys are good. They're from Western Australia, and their music is heavy on the synths, with a cheeky bit of saxophone thrown in for good measure. It's the sound we've come to expect from a lot of Modular bands, but one that we'll hear plenty of over the coming summer festival season.

Their debut album called "Keep Your Dreams" came out yesterday, but Modular have been kind enough to stream it to us through Soundcloud. I'm a big fan of this one, so enjoy!

Poolside Music

My man Sashi put me onto these guys. Poolside music are a couple of dudes from LA making music in their poolhouse. Seriously, their poolhouse. Only in LA, I guess! They describe their music as 'daytime disco'; sounds to capture the feeling of a perfect afternoon.

I loved their version of "Harvest Moon" that you may have heard on Soggy Disco Biscuit Volume 6. But now that summer's on the way, I'll be playing this mixtape. Here's hoping the guys will mix another one soon.

Gotye -- Somebody That I Used To Know remixes

You'd have to be living in a cave (or on Classic Rock FM) not to have heard Gotye's amazing song "Somebody That I Used To Know". It's a ripper, and reminds me of Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush singing "Don't Give Up". There are some really good remixes floating around at the moment. Here is just a sample.

Chic featuring Nile Rodgers

What do you know about Chic? You'll know their song "Le Freak", no doubt. You probably even know the story of how this song came to be written. With the band being refused entry at the door to Studio 54 and going home and writing the lyric "Fuck off" in response -- which later became "Freak Out". It's a good story. It's a great song. But that's not the whole story about the band Chic.

You might also know some of their other songs. How about the song "Good Times" that was sampled by The Sugarhill Gang for "Rapper's Delight"? Or the song "Soup for One" that was sampled by Modjo for "Lady"? Grab this album and have a listen!

But, what you might not know is that Chic are coming to town! And Nile Rodgers will also be playing a lot of the other songs he's famous for, like "Let's Dance" by David Bowie. Take a listen to this live version from a gig they did in Tokyo only a few months ago!

Body Language

It's hard to actually pin-point exactly who or what Body Language actually are. As they put it; “Depending on the day, we’re producing indie music, DJing house, disco and Detroit techno, or writing pop songs on the piano." They're a band from Brooklyn, with a new album out. But they are also pretty good DJs with a keen ear for disco.

I'm loving some old 70s disco at the moment. And I'm loving this little mix from the Body Language crew. Get on it!

ZIP fm -- Lithuania

ZIP fm is a radio station somewhere in Lithuania. I couldn't work out where. Anyway, on Sunday nights they have a radio show called "Love in Slow Motion", starting at 10pm. Well, on the 11th September, the second half of the show was a broadcast of Soggy Disco Biscuit Volume 5. Have a listen below because the first hour is pretty good. Oh, and if anyone can tell me what the radio DJ is saying as he's introducing my mix, then let me know!

DJ Shadow -- The Music That Inspired "Endtroducing"

"Endtroducing" by DJ Shadow is just one of those albums that when you listen to it the first time, you just sit there, gobsmacked at it all going on. It came out in 1996, but I only got it years later. I think someone bought this for me as a present on vinyl. It just seemed right to have this on vinyl. The whole album is one huge collection of samples, drawing on everyone from Nirvana to Kraftwerk.

Download "Endtroducing" here

Here's a download from the radio show BBC 6 Mix with an interview with DJ Shadow explaining his influences and what drove him to create this ground-breaking album. It's a good listen.

Another Angle -- Meatskull

Lyndon Pike hosts a radio show in Sydney on 2ser , 107.3 on your fm dial. I've never listened to it, or heard anything from that radio station at all. But I do listen to the stuff that he uploads to his blog.

One mixtape that I love is his "Another Angle" series. A lot of the time, it's a recording of his radio show, or at the least a sample of the tunes he played during the show. Other times, it's a collection of tracks he's listening to and would like us to listen to as well.

The music is low-tempo, introspective, Sunday arvo on the couch with a good book and an hour to kill. Put on your headphones, pour a large Pimms, stare out the window kinda stuff. Sometimes there's some wobbly beats, some dubby sub-step, some reggae. Other times it's edits and dub excursions. Mostly, it's sonic textural soundscapes.

Details of his radio show can be found here
Go to his blog here

Have a listen to my favourite "Another Angle" episode, Volume 47

Where else are you gonna find dub, detroit deep house, slanted beats, inspired mash ups, Indian pop, and Tina Turner covering a Massive Attack classic? Nowhere, that’s where. Hop onboard the Meatskull express as the Another Angle series grows and grows.

Sorcerer – Dayglow

Underworld -- Complete Discography

In the early 90s, the band Underworld only meant one thing to me -- the song "Underneath the Radar". Quite a cool track, but nothing outstanding. Then, someone slipped me a tape and said; "Take a listen to these guys. I know them, this is gonna be their new album". The tape was "Dubnobasswithmyheadman" and the band was a newly updated version of Underworld. That tape did not come out of my Sony Walkman for months.

If you want to hear a track that typifies everything that was wrong with 80s music, take a listen to "I Need A Doctor" from their first album; "Underneath the Radar". It sounds like a bad mix between Icehouse and Mondo Rock.

But then, have a listen to how they changed. "Mmm Skyscraper ... I love you" is a hauntingly dark and melancholic exploration of beats and pieces.

Their most famous song, and the one that changed their fortunes completely, is "Born Slippy". It featured in the soundtrack to Trainspotting, and was probably the song every DJ played at midnight, New Year's Eve in 2000. Lager, lager, lager!

You should probably have every Underworld album, so here they are.

    Underneath the Radar (1988)

    Change the Weather (1989)

      Dubnobasswithmyheadman (1994)

      Beaucoup Fish (1999)

        DJ Harvey

DJ Harvey is one old dude. Take a good look at him. He reminds me of that famous mugshot photo of Nick Nolte. If you saw him on the street, you'd probably either look the other way, or offer him some loose change from your pockets. But Harvey doesn't need your money. The guy's been DJing forever.

I first caught a set from him at The Ministry of Sound back in the early 90s. He'd play in the front bar, and drop a selection of disco-fused house numbers that would get us all shaking. Good tunes! He also played at the Gardening Club, another favourite of ours in Covent Garden.

I missed him at the Meredith Music Festival in 2010, but my wife woke up to the sounds of Olivia Newton-John's "Xanadu" and got out of the tent and ventured down to the hill to catch the end of his set. Good thing too, because Harvey's rock star antics at the end of this set are now yet another Meredith Music Festival legend. Take a look below.

Here's an interview he did for the "Beats in Space" radio show and a bit of a mix he put together that plays in the background.

Soggy Disco Biscuit -- Volume 7

Well, September was a great month for the mixtape! It was played 1151 times and downloaded 632 times. I'm pretty stoked with that and I hope you're all enjoying the tunes. Like any good DJ, I'm happy to take requests so leave a comment if you want to hear a tune next month.

I've got a  cracker of a mixtape for you this month. I managed to get one of my all time favourite songs in there; "Music Sounds Better With You", and it's a really nice remix. A couple of older tracks, including a classic by Armand Van Helden before he became Ducksauce, a cool version of an old MJ groove, and Lemon Jelly remixing Atlantic Ocean's "Waterfall". What really stands out for me this month is this killer version of "Promised Land" by Findlay Brown. If you downloaded and watched "Pump Up The Volume", you'll understand how important the original version was at the time. And that Style Council version can piss off! This version is a stunner. Oh, and how cool are the Bag Raiders?

        Pump Up The Volume

No, not the film that launched Christian Slater's career and my new hairstyle in the early 90s. Not even the song by M/A/R/R/S. Something even better! The Chanel 4 Documentary about the history of dance music. This was first broadcast in 2001 and covers the rise in dance music culture from Disco in the 70s through to the beginnings of House in the early 80s and its splintering into different genres in the 90s. Some amazing footage and some great shots inside the clubs of the time. The soundtrack to this documentary is outstanding. The interviews with DJs like Paul Oakenfold, Carl Cox, Pete Tong, Goldie, The Shamen, Leftfield, Underworld, Youth, Tony Wilson, and Armin Van Helden are brilliant. Download all three episodes and watch it over the weekend in one sitting.
